WHAT IS ABDOMINOPLASTY?

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a “Tummy Tuck”, is a surgical procedure that creates a smoother and more defined abdominal region by addressing three components:

  • Loose skin and stretch marks
  • Muscle weakness (which can occur as a result of pregnancy)
  • Excess fat tissue (commonly accumulated in the lower abdomen)

This procedure is often done to achieve a flatter and more toned abdominal contour, particularly for individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight or have excess skin and muscle laxity due to pregnancy or aging.

An abdominoplasty requires an incision, typically below the bikini line that extends from hip to hip along the lower pubic area. Excess skin is stretched and removed to flatten the abdominal muscles.

This procedure can take approximately 2-4 hours. The Lexington Plastic Surgeons’ preferred tummy tuck method is considered a classical abdominoplasty.

You should be an adult in good general health, preferably a non-smoker. Patients undergoing this procedure should have realistic expectations for the results after surgery and be ready to maintain a healthy lifestyle and follow the medical team’s instructions for recovery and beyond.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The recovery period can vary from person to person, but typically it takes about 4-6 weeks to fully recover from an abdominoplasty. During this time, you may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort. It's important to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions, including avoiding strenuous activities and wearing compression garments, to ensure a smooth recovery.

Yes, there will be a scar after an abdominoplasty. The incision is usually made horizontally along the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area. The length of the scar will depend on the amount of excess skin being removed. However, our surgeons will make efforts to place the incision in a way that it can be easily concealed by underwear or swimwear. Over time, the scar will fade, but it is important to follow proper scar care instructions provided by your surgeon to promote healing.

Abdominoplasty can help improve the appearance of stretch marks, particularly those located on the lower abdomen. During the procedure, excess skin is removed, which may also involve removing some stretch marks. However, it's important to note that not all stretch marks can be completely eliminated, and the extent of improvement will vary depending on the individual's skin elasticity and the location and severity of the stretch marks.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications associated with abdominoplasty. These can include infection, bleeding, scarring, fluid accumulation, poor wound healing, and blood clots, among others. It is important to thoroughly discuss these risks with your surgeon before deciding to undergo the procedure.
