WHAT ARE NEUROTOXIN INJECTIONS?
Neurotoxins, commonly known by brand names Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, are injectable solutions that temporarily block nerve receptors in the muscle, preventing lines and wrinkles from forming. They can be used to treat muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, excessive sweating, and overactive bladder, in addition to reducing fine lines, crows feet, and wrinkles between brows. A typical treatment takes about 10-15 minutes with noticeable effects in just days.
Neurotoxin injections are effective for both men and women. Treatments may last up to 4 months.
BOTOX AND FACIAL INJECTABLE RECOVERY
Botox injections generally require little to no recovery time, and you can return to your normal activities immediately after your appointment.
However, there are some things you can do to help reduce swelling, bruising, or redness, and to ensure the injections are as effective as possible:
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the injection site, as this can cause the botulinum toxin to move to another area of your face.
- For the first four hours after treatment, try to stay upright and avoid lying down. Lying down too soon could also cause the toxin to migrate to other muscles in your face.
- For 24 hours after treatment, avoid physical exertion, including exercise. Your doctor may recommend waiting even longer.
- If you received a facial injection, try to avoid wearing makeup for 24 hours.
- Your dermatologist may advise you to avoid alcohol, blood thinners, and some herbal supplements for a while, as they can increase your risk of bruising.
- For at least a week or two after treatment, avoid any skin treatments like facials, dermal fillers, exfoliating scrubs, or facial massages.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
In general, Botox lasts 3-4 months. Some patients experience longer lasting (4-6 months) results, while others experience shorter ones. It is also common for first-timers to notice that it may not last as long initially but may last longer after the second treatment.
Neurotoxins can be used to address lines and wrinkles on a number of different areas, including the hairline, forehead, eye area (crow’s feet), and lip lines. Injections may also be used to soften dimpling of the chin. Neurotoxins can also be injected into the muscles of the jaw to help relieve pain from teeth grinding or for a jaw slimming effect.
Preventative Botox is used to slow the development of fine lines and deep wrinkles in individuals that have not yet developed them. It’s used to stop certain facial movements (like frowning, furrowing or squinting) from causing lines to form. This is recommended for people that are concerned about early aging, due to family history or other personal reasons.
The procedure is not considered painful. Neurotoxin injection treatments are quick with minimal discomfort. Most patients report a brief period of discomfort during the injection, which subsides once the process is complete. The treatment requires no anesthesia or recovery time. Many people get the injection during their lunch hour and are able to return to work right after their appointment.
