WHAT IS A BREAST LIFT?

A mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, is for individuals seeking to rejuvenate drooping breasts by modifying the size, contour, and elevation of the breasts.

A mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift, presents a transformative solution for individuals seeking to rejuvenate drooping breasts and restore their youthful contour. As time passes, factors such as gravity and loss of skin elasticity can impact the appearance of a woman’s breasts, particularly after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Through a mastopexy, excess skin is removed, and the nipple and remaining tissue are repositioned to elevate and reshape the breasts. This procedure not only enhances the breasts’ shape and firmness but also reduces the size of the areola, providing a more proportionate aesthetic. For those desiring increased volume and size, breast implants can be placed either above or beneath the chest muscle in conjunction with a breast lift.

Typically lasting 2-3 hours, mastopexy procedures offer various techniques tailored to individual needs, including circumareolar mastopexy (incision only around the areola), vertical mastopexy (limited incision around the areola with vertical line extended directly down), inverted “T” mastopexy (incision around the areola with vertical and horizontal lines), and augmentation mastopexy (simultaneous breast lift and augmentation with breast implants). Through mastopexy, individuals can reclaim confidence in their appearance, embracing uplifted and rejuvenated breasts that reflect their inner vitality and beauty.

You should be an adult in good general health, preferably a non-smoker. Patients undergoing this procedure should have realistic expectations for the results after surgery, as well as be ready to maintain a healthy lifestyle and follow the medical team’s instructions for recovery and beyond.

BREAST LIFT RECOVERY

  • Bruising and swelling of the breasts are common for 1-3 days post-surgery, along with slight discomfort for up to 7 days.
  • Following the removal of bandages or surgical bra, a soft support bra should be worn for 3-4 weeks to provide additional support and minimize swelling.
  • Stitches will be removed in stages over a period of 3-4 weeks to facilitate proper healing.
  • Most patients can expect to return to work within 5-7 days post-surgery, although this may vary based on individual healing progress.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

While a mastopexy primarily focuses on lifting and reshaping the breasts, it may also result in a slight reduction in breast size due to the removal of excess skin and tissue. However, the primary goal of the procedure is to improve breast shape and position rather than significantly alter size.
Scarring is inevitable with any surgical procedure, but your surgeon will make every effort to minimize visible scarring by placing incisions in discreet locations and using advanced surgical techniques. Over time, scars typically fade and become less noticeable.
The duration of a mastopexy procedure depends on the specific techniques used and the extent of correction needed. On average, a mastopexy can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours to complete.
Recovery from a mastopexy involves some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the treated area. Patients may need to wear a surgical bra or compression garment to help support the breasts and minimize swelling. Most patients can return to work and light activities within 1-2 weeks, but strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks.
While some initial results may be visible shortly after surgery, it can take several weeks to months for the final results of a mastopexy to fully develop as swelling subsides and the breasts settle into their new shape and position.

Like any surgical procedure, a mastopexy carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, adverse reaction to anesthesia, changes in nipple sensation, asymmetry, scarring, and difficulty breastfeeding. However, serious complications are rare when the procedure is performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon.
